FAQ
What data volumes does Bizgres MPP support?
Bizgres MPP scales from hundreds of gigabytes to tens of terabytes and beyond. Bizgres MPP’s Dynamic Provisioning allows organizations to scale out using increments of almost any size, at any time, using powerful, inexpensive x86-based servers.
What levels of price/performance does Bizgres MPP deliver?
Bizgres MPP delivers 10 to 50 times the performance of traditional RDBMS products for a fraction of the cost.
Why is Bizgres MPP that much faster?
Bizgres MPP’s breakthrough performance results from its shared-nothing architecture, parallel processing algorithms, and advanced interconnect technology. These factors combine to deliver blazing-fast performance.
Why is Bizgres MPP that much less expensive?
Enterprise software is ridiculously overpriced in general. Greenplum is able to deliver all of Bizgres MPP’s benefits to customers for such an attractive price because the company leverages two dominant forces in the technology industry. One force is open source software. Bizgres MPP leverages some of the most successful and fastest growing open source technologies in existence: Linux, Open Solaris, and PostgreSQL. The other force is the widening availability of incredibly powerful but inexpensive hardware. Bizgres MPP was conceived, designed and engineered to allow customers to take advantage of large clusters of increasingly powerful, increasingly inexpensive servers, storage, and switches.
How is Bizgres MPP different from Bizgres?
Bizgres MPP is designed for large, enterprise deployments that require vast scale and high performance. It utilizes clusters of many machines, whereas Bizgres was designed to run on a single machine, and is targeted at departmental data marts and smaller enterprise warehouses.
Why is Bizgres MPP better-suited to business intelligence and data warehousing than databases like Oracle?
Bizgres MPP’s “shared-nothing” architecture is optimal for fast queries and loads because it places processors as close as possible to the data itself, and performs queries and other operations with the maximum degree of parallelism possible. “OLTP” architectures like Oracle’s were designed and built with an entirely different purpose and are not capable of the kinds of parallelism, or performance, that Bizgres MPP delivers.
What is included with Bizgres MPP?
Bizgres MPP is software. Software packaging gives our customers the maximum flexibility and control over the selection of processors, disks, switch – all of the necessary hardware. Greenplum continually tests Bizgres MPP on various hardware and O/S configurations from top vendors to ensure the highest compatibility and reliability. Part of what Greenplum delivers with Bizgres MPP is access to our hardware experts to help you select the gear that’s right for your organization.
What hardware can I use with Bizgres MPP?
What’s your preference? Bizgres MPP is tested with tried and true configurations of inexpensive hardware from the biggest names in the business. You can choose your vendor and your configuration, leaning on Greenplum’s experts to guide you if you so desire.
What is included with Bizgres MPP?
Again, choose what you prefer. Bizgres MPP supports both RedHat Linux and Open Solaris.
How is that Greenplum can deliver a product like Bizgres MPP, but no other company or organization has to date?
When the founders of Greenplum converged in 2003, they set out to change the game. They saw that enterprise software, and particularly database software, was far too expensive and performed badly. Our uniquely capable team includes some of the best minds in the industry, with experts from Oracle, Teradata, Sybase, Informix, Netezza, PostgreSQL, HPTi, CalTech, MIT, Stanford University , and other leading companies, organizations and institutions. Bizgres MPP is the result of the confluence of Greenplum’s unique vision and vast experience in the midst of undeniable industry trends.
